some say...

Writing is like bleeding your heart out on paper.

But regardless of what people say, you still want to write that must-read.

The must-read is the book that transforms people's lives.

You've probably sat and read that book which you remember transformed your life. It was a framework that you could repeatedly use, and which helped you achieve what you wanted. For me, it was Daniel Wong's 'The Happy Student' that transformed my life.

The must-read resonates deeply with you.

When you read that must-read, you keep thinking, "How did this author know this? It's creepy!" How did the author even know that I faced this problem? The must-read empathises deeply with you and resonates.

The must-read makes you take action.

Remember the must-read where you followed the framework, did the work, and started to see meaningful change in your life?

For me, it was 'The Happy Student' that transformed my life.

When Daniel first met me, I was desperate and depressed. I didn't know what to do with my life.

Then he handed me his book. And I resonated so deeply that I kept reading and reading, and doing the exercises that he recommended. One year later, I was top of my class, happier than ever, and cruising in university.

This is what a must-read can do to your life.

your reader gives you time they will never get back.

That's why every writer has a sacred promise they need to deliver.

but here's why

writing a book is crazy.

You wouldn't write a book if you weren't crazy. Of all the things to do, writing a book ranks up amongst the hardest jobs. Why?

Your organising feels incoherent.

  • You probably have a lifetime of experience. But how do you organise your thoughts in a way that doesn't look messy?
  • You may have tried outlines, drafts, but when you read it, it feels incoherent. There's no flow.
  • You're not sure how your reader is even going to get what you're trying to say.
  • And you're not sure if your ideas are even that great to warrant a book.

You're not too sure if this is what your reader needs

  • You may have started the book with a noble intention. To help the earlier version of you - who was facing these problems, to solve it.
  • But now that you're properly writing the book, you're not too sure if this is what your reader even needs.
  • You read the book and the ideas feel limp and uninspiring.
  • Would people really pay for this book?

your writing feels limp

  • Making your words leap off the page, and into the minds of your reader is no mean feat.
  • But we've all had that experience where we've even wanted to skip work, to continue reading the book in our hands.
  • That's the power of a true must-read.
  • It's something that's so powerful, that it transforms your reader.

Here's our process

01

  • Create a reader profile
  • To best understand the reader, we don't just create something out of thin air. But we ask you to point to us who your ideal reader is - in the form of a real, breathing human being. Whether it be your mum or your dog (ideally not), it's someone we will have at the back of our minds as we write.
  • As we write, we continually ask ourselves - would the reader find this useful?

02

  • Collect stories and arguments
  • This is where we begin to diverge by continually finding more and more stories by interviewing those you identify as key stakeholders.
  • We continually put the book through its paces by testing what we write, whether it be through newsletters or conversations. We test the material by getting editors to constantly refine and define - what's the core message of this book? What is the heart of the book? What is the red thread, without which this book won't stand?

03

  • Choose according to criteria
  • When we've gotten the core message locked, we begin to put everything we write through that filter. We keep asking ourselves, would this statement contribute to the development of this core message?
  • Then we ask - would what is written actually serve the reader? The reader gives us time they will never get back. We need to give them what they are looking for.

04

  • Coax narrative
  • Based on the data we've gathered, we build a narrative that is cogent, tight, and reads well.
  • This may sound easy, but it never is.

you may feel your idea is bad...

but It doesn't matter where you start, but where you end - with your book in hand.

Here's the story of how we did Allkin's book on Anticipatory grief.

1. Allkin started with a radical concept on grief.

Instead of only addressing grief after it happened, why not address grief before it happened?

But this also meant that when the initial script came through to us, it was a little abstract and difficult to understand.

3. We kept the end-reader at the front of our minds.

When we first started putting our reader - a 54 year old lady with a rapidly deteriorating mother she was caring for, that was when every piece we wrote became clearer. Did it work or not work? Was it useful or not?

2. we sat down, talked and came to some core concepts.

As we continued to talk to them, we knuckled down on some core concepts that Allkin wanted to put across. We believed that this would help them to crystallise the essence of the book.

4. We COALESCED it around the central idea of grieving before you need to.

As we wrapped the book around the central idea, the book became clearer, and more cogent and coherent. Things became much easier to read. And readers got what they needed.

Us? We got the satisfaction of creating a book that was useful for others.
